As infernos continue to rage in the drought stricken Southern Cape and Cape Winelands district, firefighters are still braving the heat and battling to contain the fires.
Southern Cape Fire Chief Annelize Lamprecht says the terrible heat and wind are adding to the crisis.
“It’s up to 44C which makes it extremely difficult to get these fires under control,” said Lamprecht.
Fire teams have been brought in from Kwa-Zulu Natal and the Free State.
Lamprecht says a strong westerly wind is hindering efforts to contain the fire that is threatening commercial pine plantations.
Meanwhile, in Franschoek, the extent of the blaze is being assessed by Incident Commander of Cape Nature, Wendy Towe.
According to a statement efforts to douse the fire, that has wrecked a sawmill, a cellar and several buildings in the area, is proving to be effective.
Five fire fighting teams from Tulbach and Stellenbosch are assisting Cape Nature, the Cape Winelands District Municipality in their fire fighting efforts.
