Following continued close monitoring of the coast between Noordhoek and Muizenberg by Shark Spotters over the past five days, the City has decided to remove the shark alert that it issued last week.

It has been found that the number of shark sightings has now decreased and stabilised to the extent that an alert is no longer warranted.

The City issued the initial public alert on 4 February 2010, based on an increase in shark sightings in False Bay, especially the Fish Hoek, St. James and Muizenberg beaches.

The increase in shark sightings coincided with increased biological activity observed in False Bay during the preceding days.

“The City wishes to once again remind the public that its entire coastline is frequently visited by sharks, especially Great White Sharks. General safety measures apply all the time.

“Beach users must familiarise themselves with the warning signs used by Shark Spotters, which are present at Muizenberg, Kalk Bay, St James, Clovelly, Fish Hoek, Glencairn and Noordhoek beaches” said Director: Sport, Recreation and Amenities Gert Bam.
