Members of the public have been invited to share in the commemoration of the release of Nelson Mandela 20 years ago on Thursday.

The ANC says the day will be a celebration of the freedom and the achievement of democracy that many people lived and died for.

The celebration will include a symbolic march from the Drakenstein Correctional Centre near Paarl led by ANC veteran Winnie Mandela and deputy police minister Fikile Mbalula on Thursday morning.

Meanwhile the Democratic Alliance has today filed its responding affidavit in its legal action against President Jacob Zuma’s appointment of Menzi Simelane as the National Director of Public Prosecution.

The original application was filed in December.

DA leader Helen Zille is asking the North Gauteng High Court to declare Zuma’s decision to appoint Simelane invalid and inconsistent with his constitutional obligation to appoint someone fit and proper.
