The National Union of Metalworkers yesterday hailed the appointment of former Reserve Bank Governor Tito Mboweni as the new non-executive chairman of packaging company, Nampak.
The company made the announcement that Mboweni, also a former cabinet minister in the first democratic government, will take office from 1 June.
It is Mboweni’s first corporate appointment since stepping down as governor.
Spokesperson for the union Castro Ngobese said their hoped Mboweni would use the opportunity to see the brutality of the conservative and neo-liberal policies he advanced as governor.
He said they strongly believe that he will use this position as part of making sure that companies are transformed because they reflect the old, apartheid white executive.
