US Ambassador Donald H Gips made a brief appearance at the Bush Radio studios as part of his engagement with community based organisations.

In an interview with the station’s administrator, Brenda Leonard, Gips spoke of a renewed bilateral relationship between the two countries under the Zuma and Obama administrations.

He said the relationship between Presidents Jacob Zuma and Barack Obama was very strong, and warm.

He added that the US together with South Africa, are working on exciting challenges, specifically climate change and the plight of HIV/AIDS.

Gips also spoke of the African Growth and Opportunity Agreement enabling African countries to import produce at a lower rate of tax and more lenient quotas.

“The challenge is that Americans are buying less across the board but our economy is turning around.

“But what I am trying to do as ambassador is to stimulate more trade between our two countries, in particular working with black South African entrepreneurs to help them get access to American markets and to promote their products,” said Gips.

On the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup, the Ambassador said the country was well prepared and he was “optimistic about an incredibly successful Cup”.

“I hope to see Bafana Bafana play the US in the finals,” he quipped.
