The City of Cape Town’s Disaster Response Teams have issued a warning about their mop-up operations across the city following heavy rainfalls over the weekend.

The rainfalls are the result of a cold front which passed through the Cape Peninsula yesterday.

The South African Weather Service has issued a severe weather warning and conditions are set to improve by Thursday June 17 .

Wilfred Solomons-Johannes says Disaster Response Teams are currently assessing the areas which have been reported to determine the number of dwellings that have been flooded.

“Reports have come in that the following areas have been flooded: Morkel Cottages in the Strand, Fisantekraal near Durbanville, Freedom Farm in Bishop Lavis and Mkonto Square, Oscar Mepetha and Never Never in Philippi,” says Solomons-Johannes.

He emphasized that Disaster Response Teams will remain on high-alert during the warning period.

“The City’s Roads and Stormwater Department and other City Departments are busy clearing blocked drains and roadways,” he addded.

In the event of a life- or property-threatening emergency, the public are advised to dial 107 from a land-line or 021 480 7700 from a cell phone.

Flooding, blocked drains and service disruptions and power failures can be reported to the City’s 24-hour technical operations centre at 0860 103 089. Power failures can also be reported by SMS to 31220.

Motorists who are experiencing delays and deviations on roadways can contact the City’s Transport Information Centre on 0800 65 64 63 for more information.
