A 21-year old man has died while trying to put out a veld fire on his parents’ farm near Bethlehem in the Free State.

Jaco Nortje has suffered burns up to 90-percent of his body and died at a hospital in Bloemfontein.

Meanwhile, another farm worker sustained 25 to 35% burn wounds on Friday while fighting veld fires near Brandfort.

Koos du Toit from Soutpan is in a stable but critical condition in the Bloemfontein Medi-clinic.

This comes after wildfires erupted near Thabazimbi in western Limpopo early this morning.

Working on Fire says high temperatures and strong winds are making it very difficult to douse the flames. About 60-thousand hectares of land have already been destroyed.

Working on Fire spokesperson, Kobus Visser said no injuries have been reported thus far.
