The Gauteng public and private health sector workers have been put on high alert following the outbreak of polio in Congo.
The Health Department is worried that the disease will spread as people enter South Africa from Congo.
The signs and symptoms people need to look out for are fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, weakness and loss of function of limbs and muscle pain.
The department is asking people who have any of the symptoms to seek medical help.
In Congo the virus is mostly affecting teenagers and adults.
The department said people needed to wash their hands before eating, as well as after using the toilet, as the polio virus was commonly spread through hands contaminated with infected stool.
