Minor arrested with firearm at Belhar school

Learner arrested at a High School in Belhar for being in possession of a firearm inside school premises.

Police spokesperson Captain Joe Wilson says the principle contacted police for assistance and the Station Commander responded himself. After interviewing some of the learners a 13 year old minor was identified, but he already left the school premises.

“Follow up information led to the search of several houses, in an attempt to retrieve the firearm. About 15:00, six hours later they found the minor wandering between Chest Nut Place flats', but without the firearm.

“The principle expressed his appreciation for the police’s diligence to recover the firearm,” said Wilson.

Wilson added that SAPS members will do anything in their power to ensure the safety of learners at schools. This warning was echoed by Lieutenant Colonel Fred Jacobs, Station

Lieutenant Colonel Fred Jacobs warned parents to be aware of the whereabouts of their children or people that they associated with and to ensure that minors do not have access to firearms added Wilson.
