The South African Air Force has saved the day for a group of school children and their teachers outside Uitenhage in the Eastern Cape.

This after the five children and three teachers were left stranded when the bridge between their school and the main road collapsed.

An Air Force helicopter took them across the river, where they were handed over to the SA Police Service and taken to safety by car.

Heavy rains continue to fall in the area, with many roads and bridges washed away.
