1 billion illegal cigarettes seized

The Tobacco Institute of Southern Africa says about one-billion illegal cigarettes have to date been seized through over six-thousand interventions by law enforcement officials.

The Institute’s Francois van der Merwe says more than 500 people have been arrested in the raids.

The Alexandra Magistrate’s Court in Johannesburg yesterday took a married couple and a former Revenue Service worker are in custody in connection with over 200 charges related to smuggling illegal imports cigarettes.

They will appear in court again on Tuesday.
