With World Pneumonia Day taking place today, the South African Medical Association is urging the public to strengthen their fight against this bacterial infection.
Sama seeks to raise awareness of pneumonia as a public health issue and help prevent the millions of avoidable deaths that occur from it, especially when it is combined with HIV/Aids.
Sama spokesperson, Norman Mabasa says people should know that Pneumonia is part and parcel of the problems in healthcare.
Mabasa adds that the bacterial infection is a partner with HIV/AIDS so it is important to raise awareness about it amongst the public.
