The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries tomorrow is co-hosting the Agriculture and Rural Developments Day with the Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources Policy Analysis Network at the Durban University of Technology.

The minister of Agriculture, forestry and fisheries Tina Joemat-Pettersson says this is a very important platform as it brings together approximately 500 persons from government, civil society, scientist and private sector to build consensus on what requires to address climate change adaptation and mitigation challenges in the agricultural sector.

Joemat-Pettersson says this year has been declared the International year for Forests. She says South Africa recognises the importance of forests and the role they play in sustaining commercial industries and conserving the biological diversity and mitigating against the effect of climate change.

The Minister concluded that climate change poses many threats to agriculture, including the reduction of agricultural productivity, production income and stability.
