President Jacob Zuma says residents of the Hazelmere area in KwaZulu-Natal will for the first time have access to clean electricity generated from their backyards.

Zuma yesterday launched a flagship solar power plant in the area. It is designed to stimulate skills development and create jobs – especially for young people.

The President said in his address to the Cop17 climate change talks in Durban earlier that South Africa would explore the renewable energy option.

On Saturday, thousands of people from around the world took to the streets of Durban to call for action on climate change.

Protestors handed over a letter to the President of Cop17, Maite Nkoana-Mashabane and United Nations climate change executive secretary Christiana Figueres.

The World Wildlife Fund’s Tasneem Essop says the march shows that people want concrete steps from their governments.
