Today at Cop17/CMP7 the Department of Environmental Affairs hosted an Oceans Day.

The aim of Oceans Day was to highlight the direct link between climate change, the health of the oceans; human well-being and the need for sufficient funding to support bold mitigation and adaptation measures.

The Director of Communications in the Department of Environmental Affairs Zolile Nqayi said it is important to highlight the importance of oceans.

The United Nations released a report stating that 40% of the oceans were heavily affected by human activities. Nqayi said the oceans can only absorb so we need to stop polluting our oceans.

Nqayi added that the Department of Environmental Affairs would like the outcomes from COP17/CMP7 to be that oceans need to be firmly on the agenda. #COP17
