Police in Durban are dressed in riot gear as they monitor the many
thousands of demonstrators taking part in a mass protest on what they have named global day of action at the 17th Conference of the Parties.

The organisers say they expect thousands more to join the rally later today.

The protest is a colourful affair with people carrying giant balloons and placards and dressed in many colours – in fluorescent orange vests.

Protesters say their main aim is to try to get COP 17 negotiators to listen to the man in the street.
