Armed groups in Syria have kidnapped 48 Iranians who were on a pilgrimage in Damascus.

The Iranian state news agency says the pilgrims were seized on the Damascus airport road as they returned from a religious shrine.

The Iranian embassy says it knows where the victims are and a process is underway to ensure their freedom.

Pilgrim groups have been kidnapped before during the 17-month revolt against President Bashar al-Assad’s rule.
