The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry says environmental concerns about fracking must be balanced against the economic benefits it could bring.

The government yesterday lifted the moratorium on the extraction of natural gas in the Karoo, despite environmentalists’ opposition to hydraulic fracturing.

Sacci CEO Neren Rau says the economic benefits lie in the fact that the country could become more self-reliant in terms of energy resources.

It supports the undertaking that companies wanting to undertake shale gas exploration would have to comply with stringent environmental impact assessment standards.
