The 14 January 2013 marks the fifth year after the people of Skierlik were brutally massacred by Johan Nel, and it is reported that the victims of this event are still struggling to come to terms with this brutal attack that killed their loved ones.
Johan Nel shot 12 people on 14 January 2008 in what was alleged to be racially motivated.

The Congress of South African Trade Unions in the North West has joined this years` commemoration but says they are worried by the manner in which things are done.

Cosatu Provincial Secretary Solly Phetoe said this event has been used a cash cow for some individuals who are in positions of power.

Phetoe said Cosatu has been informed that the families are not involved in these activities and some consultants continue to promise food parcels and money to the families.

Cosatu also said that racism is still rife in that area and there is no clear program of building a united society within the area of Swartruggens.

Phetoe further said the anti-racism committees led by both the Human Rights Commission and government was established but has made no progress, only the issue of forgiveness led by some individuals to benefit from the racial killing of those poor people killed by Nel in 2008.
