In 2012, COSATU called on the mineworkers to engage in industrial action to put pressure on the management and owners of the mines give in to the workers’ demands.

COSATU’s call resulted in the wave of devastating wildcat strikes that engulfed the mining sector towards the end of last year.

UDM President Bantu Holomisa said it is concerning to hear that management of the various mines is now planning to retrench some of its workforce.

Holomnisa said that the UDM is now calling on the government, the chamber of mines and the unions to sit around the table and find a solution to these looming retrenchments, to consider bailing out of these mines in the mean time as it has been in the past.

The UDM calls on the President and the commission at Marikana to make sure that no one is retrenched not until such time that the findings of the commission has been published.
