The South African Human Rights Commission says it is a great concern to note that there is an increasing number of reports of excessive use of force by the South African Police Services from the Boland/Winelands area including Barrydale, Robertson, Wolsely, Clanwilliam and De Doorns.

The SAHRC Western Cape Office has received and continues to receive complaints of allegations of human rights abuses against farm workers and rural dwellers including women and children.

On Wednesday five members of the Mawubuye Land Rights Movement were denied bail after appearing at the Swellendam court on charges of public violence.

The members were arrested on Tuesday.

Head of Communications for the South African Human rights commission Isaac Mangena said the commission is investigating allegations of use of violence by police.

Mangena added that most of the complaints are about living conditions in farms and racism remarks.
