Students of Stellenbosch University are today holding a silent protest over the death of 17-year-old Anene Booysen who was brutally raped and killed in Bredasdorp.

Student Representative Council member for Critical Engagement Ziyanda Stuurman said they want to send a very clear message that any sexual violence will be opposed with an unwavering unified stance.

Stuurman said that the fact that a woman is raped every four minutes in the country is overwhelming.

“As much as it is something we can speak out about it, we need to do some introspection into why there is such a culture of rape in South Africa” Stuurman said.

Stuurman added that rape happens too often in our society.
