The Independent Police Investigative Directorate on Wednesday said deaths in police custody as a result of police action have decreased.

IPID Spokesperson Moses Dlamini said although the numbers are still unacceptably high, they have come down considerably over the last four years.

Dlamini said the last annual report by the IPID indicated that there 720 incidents of deaths in police custody in the financial year of 2011-12.

Dlamini said this was a decrease of 10% compared to 2010-11 and 32% were deaths in police custody and 68% were deaths as a result of police action.
