The national departments of Arts and Culture and Sport and Recreation South Africa said they are creating opportunities for learners at township schools in Cape Town to engage in sport, recreation, arts and culture activities.

Sport equipment was handed over to the Walter Teka Primary School and Oscar Mpetha High School in Nyanga on Wednesday.  Minister of Sport Fikile Mbalula said assisting learners to focus on sport, arts and their education will help to reduce crime in the area.

Ministerial Spokesperson for the MEC of Cultural Affairs and Sport Daniel Johnson said the handing over of equipment to the schools is linked to the WC government and the Cultural Affairs and Sport department belief that engaging in sport will combat social evils faced by young people.

“We therefore are in full support of the Nyanga Sport Council who are currently running sport and arts programmes at these schools.

“We are committed to supporting the Department in ensuring that children are playing sport” Johnson added.
