The Western Cape Department of Education on Thursday announced the new infrastructure plan for the 2013/2014 to 2016/2017 period.

MEC Donald Grant said 50 schools will receive an upgrade through the school replacement programme.

There will also be four replacement classroom projects that will be implemented during the three year period.

Ministerial Spokesperson Bronagh Casey explains that within the next three financial years the WCED will be building 46 new replacement schools in the province as well as 4 new replacement school projects.

“Replacing inappropriate structures requires building a new school on the existing school property, in some projects the new structure is built adjacent to the old structure so that the learners may continue to use the premises of the old school while the building of the new structure is underway,” added Casey.

She added that replacing the school means that they are essentially replacing the old brick and wall structure which were originally built with inappropriate material and during a past era.
