The Women’s Legal Centre has come out in
support of the Black Lawyers Association, NGO’s and other legal organisations
in opposing the attempts to impeach Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng.
WLC Director Jennifer Williams said the
call for impeachment is legally unsound and does the debate about the
transformation of the judiciary.
Williams said that their opinion is that
the constitution calls for the racial and gender representative of the country
to be reflected in the judiciary.
“We feel that the impeachment proceedings
are distracting from the real debate, which should be the transformation of the
judiciary both in form and in substance.” added Williams.
She also added that they think that the
composition of the bench is particularly significant and added that they would to
see more women on the bench.
