As schools begin another academic year today Principal of St Agnes Primary School in Woodstock Alfonso Louw said they are well on track for the 2014 academic year.  St Agnes accommodates on average about 340 to 360 learners each year.

In the Western Cape over 950, 000 learners are expected to start the 2014 academic year with WCED MEC Donald Grant saying textbooks and study materials have been delivered to schools well in advance.

Some Grade 3 learners at St Agnes Primary School said they are excited to have passed and are in a new grade.  Not many tears where shed by Grade 1 pupils at the school but a lot of excitement to be wearing a school uniform for the first time.

Several government officials have today visited different schools across the country.  Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe and Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga visited Ponelopele Oracle Secondary School in Midrand and WCED MEC Donald Grant visited Grade 1’s at Fairview Primary School.

Meanwhile the South African Democratic Teachers Union said the proposal by the African National Congress to increase the schooling years from 12 to 14, should be seen as an improvement to early childhood education.
