53-year-old expedition member dies at the Atlantic

The Department of Environmental Affairs has confirmed that a 53-year-old South African expedition member died on Tuesday on Gough Island in the Southwest Atlantic. 

Johannes Adriaan Hoffman was an electronic technician in the development and maintenance of electronic and communication systems at the Atlantic. 

Departmental Spokesperson Zolile Nqayi said he left the country last year and was scheduled to work at the Atlantic for fourteen months.

Nqayi said it has been confirmed that he died after he choked in his bedroom.  Currently we are making arrangements to return his body to South Africa as soon as possible.
