The National Sea Rescue Institute in Port Elizabeth and volunteer sea rescue duty crew launched a sea rescue craft to rendezvous with the 229 meter bulk carrier ELENI, on a voyage to Singapore, to casualty evacuated a 52 year old Filipino crewman suffering an eye injury.

NSRI Deputy Station Commander in Port Elizabeth Justin Erasmus said the injury had reportedly been sustained while the crewman had been working in the ships workshop and the ship diverted towards the nearest Port of call.

Erasmus said it arrived in Port Elizabeth, and on the same day the Port Elizabeth Sea Rescue station were tasked to carry out the casualty evacuation when the ship drew closer to land on Friday night.

Erasmus said on arrival on-scene, 7 nautical miles off-shore, we took the injured crewman aboard the sea rescue craft and brought him into the Port of Port Elizabeth where a Guardmed ambulance transported the sailor, in a stable condition, to hospital for further treatment.
