On Wednesday the National Education Health & Allied Workers Union cautioned suspended general secretary of COSATU, Zwelinzima Vavi, against using NEHAWU general secretary, Fikile Majola’s, name when dealing with COSATU’s accusations. NEHAWU spokesperson, Sizwe Pamla states that Vavi is dragging Majola’s name into the situation rather than answering allegations.

The statement is in reference to Vavi’s quote in the online version of a local newspaper concerning the employment of his stepdaughter. Pamla said the issues emanating from COSATU deal with the leadership of the federation itself and he’s the longest serving leader of that federation. We do feel that in his moment of desperation he is trying to conflate issues and confuse the people of South Africa.

NEHAWU says that Vavi stated that his stepdaughter is staying with Majola and he can’t take responsibility for why she is employed. He also states that his stepdaughter had spoken with the auditors about how she met Majola. “Why turn around and say I am conflicted?” Vavi continues.

According to Pamla the statement is false. NEHAWU maintains that the girl has never stayed with Fikile Majola, and furthermore, that even if she had it would not release him of the responsibility to always act in a manner that is above reproach.
