Alexandra township calm after violent protests

The National Joint Operations and Intelligence Structure today said it is satisfied that calm has been restored in Alexandra, Gauteng.

The residents took to the streets last night after claims of vote rigging in the area.

National Police Spokesperson General Solomon Makgale said security forces and law enforcement officers had to be deployed in the area on Friday night after acts of public violence were reported.

Makgale said 59 people were arrested over night for public violence and this morning the South African Defence Force Members were deployed in the area.

He added that calm has been restored in the area and the security forces will remain in the area.
