DA wins Western Cape Province by 59.2%

The Western Electoral Officer Rev Courtney Sampson today announced the provisional results for the province with the Democratic Alliance winning with 59.2%.  The African National Congress is second with 33.04% and the Economic Freedom Fighters with 2.11%.

Rev Courtney Sampson while addressing the media said the voter turnout in the province stands at 72.67% with spoilt ballot at 0.9%.  Sampson said the paperwork has been captured into the system and all result slips have been accounted for.

The Democratic Alliance Provincial Leader Dr Ivan Meyer while giving his celebration speech said now is the time for the people who voted to hold the political parties accountable.

“The DA will continue to carry out the electoral mandate for the people of the province” Meyer added.

The African National Congress in their press briefing thanked voters for continuing to vote for the party in the province.

ANC Provincial Leader Marius Fransman said the vote for the party has increased since 2009 by 2%.  Fransman said votes increased immensely in the rural areas.

“The ANC has consolidated its support in the Metro especially in Khayelitsha and Langa.  We will see a strong presence of the ANC in the provincial legislature” Fransman added.
