Twenty students from the Cape Peninsula University of
Technology's Gardens campus had to be evacuated to safety on Sunday evening
after a fire broke out on the first floor of the campus.
City of Cape Town’s disaster risk management
Spokesperson Wilfred Solomons Johannes said the cause of the fire is being
investigated by police.
Johannes added that one female was treated on scene
for smoke inhalation and she was an asthmatic patient and she was then transferred
to Somerset Hospital for further
medical treatment
"The building has been declared unsafe by the City of Cape Town and the
management of CPUT has been ordered to affect immediate emergency repairs to the
facility. The students have subsequently been accommodated at other residential
units or hostels of CPUT.” Johannes said.
