The vote counting for the fifth general in South Africa continued on Friday morning. The Independent Electoral Commission said most of the votes had been counted already with IEC officials saying they expected to announce the final results soon.

At the time of this blog post’s publication, the Democratic Alliance had 58.82% of the vote in the Western Cape. That’s up 10% from 2009. The African National Congress held 33.71% of the vote, up one percent from the last general election.

New comers, the Economic Freedom Fighters, have garnered 2.08% of Western Cape votes, with them likely to get a seat in the provincial legislature. EFF premier candidate, Nazier Paulson, is to take the seat.

The EFF have been compared to the Congress of the People in 2009 but they have defended their position saying that while their numbers aren’t as strong as COPE’s in their first election, the EFF is stronger than the Congress.
