The Democratic Alliance has called the move by Minister of Mineral Resources Ngoako Ramatlhodi to withdraw from the negotiations in the mining strike as a lack of leadership in the face of a very serious economic challenge.

DA MP of Mineral Resources James Lorimer said the strike has already pushed the economy to the brink of recession while also threatening the well-being of thousands of miners.

“We as the DA thinks that it shows the lack of leadership from the part of the minister to aplenty himself from the negotiations process.

Whereas I understand that he is not the best person to broker an agreement and other things he could end, he should be doing, and the one step we have suggested is to develop mining communities by finding a new source of funds in the redirection of mining royalty taxes.

If government agrees to our suggestion to pay a percentage of mining royalties to back mining communities.” Lorimer added.
