The National Union of
Mineworkers said on Friday it would oppose any attempt by cash-strapped power
utility Eskom to sell assets, especially its finance company which helps
provide home loans to employees.
The Food and Allied Workers
Union is in full support to the call made by NUM warning Eskom not to sell the
FAWU general secretary Katishi
Masemola said workers in Eskom and includes the fact that a slae of Eskom
Finance Company is nothing but a so-called unbundling project that will seek to
lay the basis for Privatisation of Eskom.
Masemola said this
Privatisation by the back-door, in a form of unbundling and on the basis of
raising funds, will be resisted by FAWU and, we believe, other unions and civil
society formations that reject the neo-liberal policy offensive by the State
and state-owned enterprises.
Masemola said we will join
hands with the NUM, National Union of Metalworkers and other unions serious and
committed in fighting privatisation like COSATU did in the 1990s.
“We call on Government and
Cabinet to veto this unbundling project and to cease pursuing privatisation
through other means” Masemola added.
