Theuns Botha has retained his position as leader of the Democratic Alliance in the Western Cape.
Botha had been opposed by community safety MEC Lennit Max and Cape Town mayor Dan Plato.
But delegates at the party’s provincial congress at Hartenbos in the Southern Cape voted overwhelmingly for him.
Some observers said before, the DA had to elect a leader of colour if it want to retain the power it grabbed from the ANC last year.
But Western Cape Premier Helen Zille said earlier the race was not important, as long as the person is qualified for the position.
Botha has been the provincial leader since 2003.
