The Railway Safety Regulator (RSR) has reported the derailment of a freight train carrying diesel at Burlington in KwaZulu-Natal early this morning.
Two locomotives and five wagons were affected, forcing the closure of the KZN main line for clean up operations.
In a statement, the RSR says “preliminary indications suggest that there was tampering with the track, resulting in the spillage of approximately 10,000 litres of diesel”.
Transnet Freight Rail is investigating the incident.
