The baby who was allegedly abducted in the Khayelitsha Day Hospital, and reported missing yesterday has been found dead.

It was thought six-week-old Simamkele Baleni was taken by an unknown woman, who had offered to take care of him while his mother visited the bathroom.

Police have confirmed that the 6 week old baby boy was taken by his 18-year-old mother, Odwa Baleni.

The body of the boy was found dumped behind shacks in Greenpoint informal settlement at approximately 21:30 last night.

Three community members saw footage of Odwa Baleni and recognised her and realized that she did take her baby into Greenpoint between the shacks and returned empty handed.

After being interrogated by investigators, 18-year-old Odwa Baleni pointed out her son’s remains to police yesterday.

The child’s corpse had been hidden under sheets of corrugated iron near the Baleni home.

It is not clear how the child died.

The mother was arrested on charges of murder and perjury.

She will remain in police custody until her Court appearance.
