Cape Town chosen as pilot area for transport system

The Western Cape transport department announced today that Cape Town has been chosen as the pilot city for a proposed integrated public transport system, to be controlled by municipalities.

Transport director General George Mahlalela said that the City of Cape Town has indicated that is it prepared to be used as a pilot area and the city must now do a feasible study.

The findings of the study are aimed at evaluating capacity and how various aspects of the project will be managed.

Mahlalela said they are expected to be ready by the end of the year.

He added that thereafter the city could seek final approval for the scheme.
