Schools officially close for the 2025 academic year for learners on Wednesday. Educators will finish off on Friday. But coupled with holidays, comes break in at schools premises. As a result, the Western Cape Education Department has heightened security at 439 schools.
‘’We appeal to members of the public to keep a close eye on their local school during the holiday period. While we are providing holiday security to 439 schools in high-risk areas, the most effective deterrent to criminals is a vigilant community. Please report any suspicious activity to SAPS immediately!,’’ said David Maynier, Western Cspe Education MEC.
The WCED reported 47 incidents of burglary or vandalism by
34 schools in the 2024 Summer holidays. A year prior, 26 incidents were
reported at 24 schools.
Reflecting on the year that was, Maynier, says 2025 has
been a long and challenging year, but there have been so many highlights to
celebrate. These include the #BackOnTrack programme, which recovered
up to 205 days’ worth of learning lost during the Covid-19 pandemic, and
learners achieving big victories on the sports field.
‘’We wish our learners, teachers and parents a peaceful and
relaxing festive season. We look forward to welcoming you all back to school in 2026 for an exciting year ahead!,’’ said the MEC.
