Two thirds majority for ANC in municipal elections
The African National Congress has won a two thirds majority in the municipal elections. This is a repeat performance of the 2000 national election results. All three major parties experienced a slight drop in support with the ANC losing about three percent support to win 66 percent of the vote. The Democratic Allinace won the Western Cape while the Inkatha Freedom Party has taken control of KwaZulu-Natal. The IEC says the results of more than 99 percent of the votes have been captured with 97 percent having been audited. The turnout of voters countrywide was just over 48 percent which is similar to the figure achieved in 2000.
