Battle lines drawn in Cape Town management
The battle concerning Cape Town city manager Wallace Mgoqi is heading for the Cape High Court after Mgoqi hired one of South Africa's top advocates, Norman Arendse, to fight the bid by the new council to oust him. New mayor Helen Zille gave Mgoqi a letter this week advising him that legal advisors deemed his contract to be invalid. The Democratic Alliance-dominated council is determined to remove him, saying the ANC move to renew his contract was irregular. Mgoqi and the ANC insist the contract is good. The Cape Argus says the legal battle is due to revolve around technicalities but will be a test of strength.
