Taxi violence claims a life in Cape Peninsula

Seven men were scheduled to appear in court today following a flare-up of taxi violence in the Cape Peninsula that has already claimed the life of one person. Trouble broke out yesterday when members of the DTA and Cata taxi bodies began fighting. Both sides reported cases of attempted murder at the Delft police station and patrols were immediately set up. The seven men were arrested in the Delft area. Police patrols are continuing in the area and an appeal has been made to the industry to maintain law and order.

Meanwhile, a 50-year-old woman on her way to work this morning lost her life when gunmen opened up fire on a passing taxi on the Stellenbosch arterial road. The shots were fired from bushes beside the road. The innocent bystander was hit in the head and died on the scene. Her name has not yet been released.
