Violence linked to the security strike continues unabated. A security guard was reportedly killed in the west of Pretoria yesterday and two security guards were seriously assaulted on a Johannesburg train yesterday evening. West Rand police spokesperson Joseph Mogoai confirmed that the men were accosted by a gang of 10 people thought to be striking security guards on a train between Witpoortjie and Roodepoort. They were beaten with sjamboks, but both are in a stable condition in hospital. No arrests have been made. At least ten security guards have been killed countrywide over the past few weeks.
Meanwhile, Satawu says the strike will not end before employers don’t agree to an 11 percent wage increase. Security industry employers are challenging the strike in the Labour Court today, where they are applying for an order to declare the industrial action illegal. Minority unions in the sector have accepted a wage increase of just more than eight percent.
