Cape Town mayor in narrow victory

Cape Town’s Mayor Helen Zille retained her power by the slender margin of two votes following a motion by the Independent Democrats to scrap the present mayoral executive committee system. The ANC backed the ID in the motion, but Zille’s Democratic Alliance-led coalition once again managed to survive with a vote of 105 to 103. The ID proposed a proportional representation executive committee system. A relieved Zille said after the vote that she was confident that her executive committee would survive the expected further attacks by the ID and the ANC.
