Claims that SA losing 2010 world cup 'laughable'

By Tarryn Le Chat

Concerns were raised when a newspaper reported that the international soccer management body, FIFA, was working on a back-up plan to move the 2010 Soccer World Cup to Australia due to violent crimes, third world public transport system, HIV/AIDS and insufficient accomodation in South Africa. According to Danny Jordaan, Chief Executive of the local organising committee for the event, said that these claims were 'laughable' and 'absolute nonsense'. The newspaper also reported that Jordaan's standard answer to everything was leading to increasing cynicism. Earlier in the week ANC MP and Chairman of Parliament's transport portfolio committee, Jeremy Cronin, criticised the Government's transport policy, saying, "I'm afraid to say that in the first decade of ANC rule, transport was a terribly neglected area and since the 90's has proven 'disastrous'.
