FIFA shortlists candidates for the Golden Ball

By Nadia Samie

Football governing body FIFA has drawn up a shortlist consisting of ten players who are candidates for the prestigious World Cup Golden Ball.

France’s Zinedine Zidane leads the nominations alongside Thierry Henry, but they face stiff competition from the Italian camp, which has four candidates on the list. Hosts Germany also made the shortlist with two players: Miroslav Klose, the leading goal-scorer in the tournament thus far, and captain Michael Ballack.

In 2002 the award went to German keeper Oliver Kahn.

The trophy will be presented on Monday. Usually, the winner comes from those teams that made it to the finals. FIFA-accredited journalists will vote on who will receive this tournament’s Golden Ball.
