Commuters left scrambling after stolen cable
By Odette Ismail
Cable thiefs cut Metrorail’s signal and communications cable on Thursday. This left many commuters trapped due to the switching of tracks that had to be done manually.
Metrorail operations control manager Johan Kriel told the Cape Times that the cable had been cut between Woodstock and Cape Town, leaving all lines affected on Thursday.
Before the mid-day busy period started, roughly 3pm, trains travelling to Cape Town were stopped while those at the central station were unable to leave.
Police were investigating the robbery, but Kriel said according to him the perpetrators were caught.
