MEC for Local government and Housing, Richard Dyantyi, has pledge to quit his position if his department does not finish building and deliver 500 government subsidised houses by the end of the year.
Dyantyi made this promise while handing over keys to two women in Harare, Khayelitsha, and Driftsands.
The houses are built through the People’s Housing Project (PHP), in which beneficiaries with government subsidies are helped by community groups to build their homes.
Stories of two unfinished houses came to the MEC’s attention in April and May during his anti-corruption meetings with communities. Dyantyi made a request to the Special Investigative Unit and the Scorpions to investigate the failure of service providers to fulfil their contractual requirements.
Dyantyi asked the Scorpions to investigate the unlawful and unauthorised payments of state subsidies in the development of low cost housing made by the accounts administrators.
